In November 1924, a P.C.E. central committee plenum met in Madrid. The leadership was criticized, the executive committee resigned and a new one was elected, with Maurín representing Catalunya, González Canet the Levante, and Martín Sastre the North (the Basque Country and Asturias). The first decision was to launch a highly aggressive periodical, «Vanguardia.»
The dictatorship reacted strongly, and in January 1925 the arrests began: Sastre and González Canet in Madrid, Maurín and others in Barcelona. The arrest of Maurín nearly cost him his life. On January 12, as he was leaving the Ateneu Barcelonés, he saw a group of men he presumed were policemen, tried to escape, and was shot in the leg. He was taken to the hospital and then to the fortress on Montjuic, from which he again tried to escape, hurting himself further in the attempt.
