Lake Maracaibo: home of the first guiri, the original tanga?

Chávez’s anti-gringo rhetoric forms the basis of his appeal, but new evidence (which may gull the gullible and disturb yet the already disturbed) suggests that the guiri–the Spanish gringo–may have actually originated in what should perhaps be renamed the República Guiriana. Here’s Gonzalo Fernández de Oviedo in Historia general y natural de las Indias (1535) in a quicko translation:

In all this lake [Maracaibo] … there are many small and medium-sized settlements of Indians called Onotos and Guiriguiris [aka Güerigueríes], who live on the water, in huts on poles, below which canoes go back and forth. They live from fishing and come and go from the lake to the shore and barter and sell the fish they kill for maize and other things with other races of Indians called Caquitios and Bubures.

These go naked like other Onotos, and they and their women conceal their shame with nothing: the Guiriguiris tie a thread to their foreskin and stuff as much inside as they can, saying that this conserves their procreational potency.

The women have another gracious manner of honesty in this, and it is most amusing. They tie round them a thread as fine as, or finer than, a quill pen, or like a thick pin, of twisted cotton; and from the this strip descends over their navel another thread no less fine than that of the belt, and this passes over the nature of the woman and finishes between their buttocks, with a knot on the end, with which [?: con cine] it enters in the purgatory or dirtiest part of their person; and if they don’t want it to enter there, they bend a bit the end of the thread and it goes forward and stays between the buttocks.

And so all the women wear this chaste cord [?: cuerda de templar] crossing their womb, as they normally have tambours or tambourines [???: como suelen tener los atambores o tamborines. Is a taut drumskin a metaphor for virginity? That would certainly help clarify Dylan's "Hey! Mr. Tambourine Man, play a song for me,/I'm not sleepy and there is no place I'm going to... /In the jingle jangle morning I'll come followin' you", as well as casting a lewd & reconstructive surgical light on Jeremiah 31:4: "Again I will build thee, and thou shalt be built, O virgin of Israel: thou shalt again be adorned with thy tabrets {tambourines}, and shalt go forth in the dances of them that make merry"]; and these women believe themselves most honest by wearing these threads, and frown muchly on those who go about without them. And if a Christian or a slave of theirs removes the string in jest, or touches them on it, they are much injured and cry more than if they were beaten; for it seems to them that their shame is well hidden behind that wall.

De la laguna de Maracaibo se ha dicho asimesmo alguna cosa en los capítulos precedentes, porque es cosa muy notable en la cosmografía destas partes; la cual los indios la llaman de Maracaibo, y los cristianos la nombran el lago de Nuestra Señora. Tiene de Norte Sur cuarenta leguas, desde la boca que sale o a la mar, hasta lo último della que tiene más al Sur. Es muy hondable, aunque tiene algunos bajos. Por encima de la sierra, donde es más ancha, habrá veinte leguas de latitud, y donde es más estrecha, tiene dos leguas de tierra a tierra, que es desde el Pasaje a la villa de Maracaibo, como se dijo en el capítulo precedente. Y en toda esta laguna, a la redonda del estrecho della adentro, están muchas poblaciones de pueblos pequeños y medianos de indios que llaman onotos y guiriguiris, los cuales viven dentro del agua, sobre barbacoas e buhíos de madera altos, que debajo dellos andan y pasan canoas. Viven de pesquerías, e van e vienen a la ribera desta laguna, y rescatan e venden aquel pescado que matan, por maíz e por otras cosas, con otras generaciones de indios caquitios e bubures.

Estos andan desnudos como los demás onotos, y ellos y sus mujeres sus vergüenzas sin alguna cosa delante: los guiriguiris traen ellos el miembro viril atado el capullo con un hilo, embebiendo todo lo demás que les es posible hacia adentro, porque dicen que así se conserva más la potencia para la generación. Las mujeres traen otra donosa manera de honestidad en esto, y es cosa para reír. Cíñense un hilo tan delgado o menos como una pluma de escribir, o como un alfiler grueso, de algodón torcido; y desde la cinta baja por sobre el ombligo otro hilo no más gordo que el de la cinta, y aquéste pasa por mitad de la natura de la mujer y va a fenescer entre las nalgas, con un nudillo al cabo, con cine, entra en el purgatorio o parte más sucia de su persona; e si allí no quiere que entre, rebuja un poco el cabo del hilo y pasa adelante y quédase entre las nalgas. De manera que todas las mujeres traen esta cuerda de templar atravesada por el vientre, como suelen tener los atambores o tamborines; e tienen estas mujeres por mucha honestidad traer este hilo, y por muy fea cosa andar sin él. E si acaso algund cristiano o su esclava propria les quitasen aquel hilo por burlar, o les tocasen en él, se injuriarían mucho, e llorarían más que si les diesen de palos; porque les paresce que detrás de aquel muro están muy escondidas sus vergüenzas.
