Barcelona has swallowed up the surrounding villages and filled them with ugly housing and carparks. Well, not entirely: one small farm of indomitable pensioners still holds out against the invaders.<\/p>\n<p>Originally a rather damp feudal landholding with church, the village where we start became the place where Barcelona's clothes were washed in the 19th century, and, when the tram arrived in 1901, a garden suburb for the middle classes. Our excursion starts in pretty village <a href=\"#pic\" onClick=\"document.main_photo.src='http:\/\/lh3.ggpht.com\/kalebeul\/SEqogyABiKI\/AAAAAAAANeM\/GZpcEr2126A\/s400\/P1040672.JPG';\">centre<\/a>, with a fine selection of <a href=\"#pic\" onClick=\"document.main_photo.src='http:\/\/lh4.ggpht.com\/kalebeul\/SGyCeEIb-dI\/AAAAAAAAOVA\/DWQu7HY1dCQ\/s400\/P1040777.JPG';\">picturesque<\/a> and <a href=\"#pic\" onClick=\"document.main_photo.src='http:\/\/lh3.ggpht.com\/kalebeul\/SEqocyABiJI\/AAAAAAAANeA\/gJB476DaJsA\/s400\/P1040671.JPG';\">modern<\/a> bars, old water towers and fountains.<\/p>\n<p>We then head out past <a href=\"#pic\" onClick=\"document.main_photo.src='http:\/\/lh4.ggpht.com\/kalebeul\/R7Li5Dpt6bI\/AAAAAAAAKts\/Afhlf69o94o\/s400\/P1030785.JPG';\">the remains of farmhouses<\/a> and over <a href=\"#pic\" onClick=\"document.main_photo.src='http:\/\/lh3.ggpht.com\/kalebeul\/R7Li8zpt6eI\/AAAAAAAAKuU\/_2jFX4sXVwg\/s400\/P1030788.JPG';\">rough land<\/a> to an area that combines a great warren of <a href=\"#pic\" onClick=\"document.main_photo.src='http:\/\/lh6.ggpht.com\/kalebeul\/SGyDmOv9HCI\/AAAAAAAAOok\/VbL8ZbUyYVw\/s400\/P1040887.JPG';\">old shantytown development<\/a> (three most interesting bars, horticulturalists squatters of various ages) with some marvellous <a href=\"#pic\" onClick=\"document.main_photo.src='http:\/\/lh6.ggpht.com\/kalebeul\/SGyDtNCNzVI\/AAAAAAAAOqU\/vhGySD7pUnk\/s400\/P1040896.JPG';\">19th century farmhouses<\/a> and <a href=\"#pic\" onClick=\"document.main_photo.src='http:\/\/lh3.ggpht.com\/kalebeul\/SGyDpohMTkI\/AAAAAAAAOpU\/wY3Ks-NyYV8\/s400\/P1040891.JPG';\">gardens<\/a>. We'll also meet some barnyard animals and The Last Farmer of Horta--if he's not down the pub.<\/p>\n<p>We continue uphill past a magnificent large fortified farmhouse and finish the walk at the Labryinth Park, with 18th century gardens used to film bits of <em>Perfume<\/em>, a neo-Moorish royal palace and a peaceful little bar.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The year is 2008 AD.
