Today in the evening in the Church of Mercy solemn matins are sung in honour of the Virgin Our Lady, to whom will be dedicated tomorrow the relevant ceremonies for the blessings bestowed on the city on various occasions, in particular in the various epidemics it has suffered. The boys choir dedicated to serving the Virgin normally takes part in this function, singing the Salve regina and Salutate Mariam. The devotion to the Virgin of Mercies is strong in the city, so that attendance at this function is not insignificant. Perhaps for this reason the night-time procession on the Rambla is not well attended, such that if we had to indicate the final day of the summer stroll, it would not seem to us unreasonable to fix this notorious custom for today, when it is deserted by the greatest number of its adherents, and when, to tell the truth, whatever the delay in the start of the season, the nocturnal humidity is not particularly suitable for those who go for a walk in order to free themselves of a cold or a migraine, to say nothing of those oh-so-patient mamas. And although there are those with a chest of bronze and a head of iron who can survive a walk between the two rows of trees, we should nevertheless be admit that in moments those in attendance flee in disorder, leaving the ground trampled flat, and with them disappear the chairs, faithful witnesses of all sorts of scenes, from the most tender to the most brutal, from the most tasteful to the most vulgar, from the most reasonable to the most ridiculous and ugly, from the most beautiful, the most delicate to the most…… what do I know? to whatever you want.
