The monarchs Joanna and her son, Charles I, ratified in this city the seal of approval of the statutes of the guild of painters, for the increase and perfection of art. The first ordenances of the guild date from 1296, the second from 1301, the third from 1446, and on October 15 1596 Philip II approved those presented on the occasion of the foundation of the brotherhood of St Lucan, patron of the guild according to the aforementioned statutes of 1519.
