A bird in the hand
Is the Nursing Madonna actually a dirty joke? Jesu, rex masturbatorum?
Juan Sánchez de Castro, Virgen de la Leche (MNAC) More pics.
I spent a happy few hours on Saturday thanks to a ticket for the MNAC donated by J, but then the worrying began: I always come away from this and other museums with more questions than I started.
The goldfinch appears in this virgo lactans by Juan Sánchez de Castro and in many other Madonna + Sprogs because its alleged fondness for thorns enabled it to foresee what kind of king the infant was going to be when he grew up. Artists sometimes employed other clearly identifiable seed-eaters, with as far as I know no systematic variation in time or place, and this liberty was inherited (or vice versa) by street charlatans and their fortune-telling avians. Here's Pío Baroja in Madrid in his memoirs, Desde la última vuelta del camino:
What I wonder, given the use of pajarito in Spanish and other languages as a euphemism for penis, is whether there was ever a smutty, incestuous undertone to this image, of choosing the "bird" over the maternal breast? A venerable, solitary sinner once claimed to me that "A bird in the hand is worth three in Kate Bush." Was there for some a sense that Jesus' chosen Passion was to be a cross made of his own body?
