He’s singing the 50s-70s hit, Carmen de España, which in the well-motivated opinion of David Pérez Rodríguez was the finest of the three big 20th century Spanish musical tributes to Mérimée’s invention–a strange tribute, however, which nationalises the story, claiming the Frenchman misled his public by presenting mangled fact as fiction:

cigarrera de Sevilla,
y a los guapos de Triana
hago andar de coronilla.
Pero no es verdad la historia
que de mí escribió un francés,
al que haría en pepitoria
si yo lo volviera ver.
Iba a servirme de camafeo

Carmen de España, manola,
Carmen de España, valiente,
Carmen con bata de cola
pero cristiana y decente
No sé quién fue el Escamillo
ni conozco a don José,
y no manejo el cuchillo
ni a las horas de comer.

Yo soy la Carmen de España
y no la de Mérimée. (bis)

Me han cantado en los teatros
lo mismo que a “La Traviata”,
mas le aviso a más de cuatro
que voy a meter la pata.

que ande suelta por ahí
una Carmen de camelo
que se la voy a partir.
De los pinreles a la peineta
yo le zurraba la pandereta.
