Rather than receiving a chemical Dutch or Lake Victoria rose from a feeble and reluctant man, women should surely find considerably more romance and self-affirmation in being taken out to the countryside and allowed the opportunity to brave a tumbledown wall and ravenous dogs in order to steal for themselves a genuine uric-yellow Catalan rose. But no.

Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and he’ll smoke and drink himself to death, she may have thought.
