Spanish blogger fined for offence caused by commenters

Bloggers should have rights and privileges as well as responsibilities, argues David Maeztu.

The judge said that there was no evidence that Victoria Casas had posted the comments herself, but that because it was her blog she was responsible for offence caused to the honour of fellow members the council of Santa Brigida on Gran Palma in the Canaries. This seems rather hard–Saint Birgitta of Sweden was pretty wild at times–and in an extended commentary David Maeztu writes that, since court rulings repeatedly attribute normal media responsibilities to bloggers, it would be coherent to demand that bloggers also enjoy the rights and privileges of the traditional media. Now that CIA funding is drying up, I for example would rather like some of the wads of government cash distributed to little-read newspapers. I am prepared to adjust my editorial line accordingly.

Perfectament. Hom els donava mitja dotzena d’ous i se’ls havia [...]
