Content theft on the web

Patricia Metola is a fine illustrator who’s had enough of people ripping off her work for profit or not. This contempt for intellectual property is an overwhelming concern for designers unable to afford lawyers, and is a major factor in limiting the availability of products online, where ripping is easy as plum pie.

I’m particularly interested in how this issue will play with the traditional news media in Spain, whose advertising revenues are falling rapidly at the same time as they’re seeing their work widely copied and pasted for reputational or financial gain (however marginal), often without attribution. For example, I find Vicente Carballido’s cherrypicking interesting and useful (and I link regularly to him in the blog roundup on the front page), but I can imagine there will come a day when he will wake up with a summons on the doormat.
