The Madeiran version, levadas, are scored into the sides of precipitous hills and usually have a more or less badly kept-up path next to them. Foreigners (you didn’t often see the locals on them) would enjoy Sunday afternoons by walking along a foot-wide path with a hundred feet of steep rocky hillside at its unfenced edge.
