Given the spectacular contribution of Iberian merchants to the spice trade, why is it that none of my local friends will go anywhere near a lamb vindaloo?

    When I lived in Lisbon in the late 90s there was *one* Indian restuarant, pretty much shunned by the Portuguese, whose national dish seems to be mainly a vehicle for salt.
