How to get Valencia to agree that Catalan and Valencian are the same

Antoni Puigverd posted a cool piece, Lenguas como cuchillos, over at LaVa the other day, calling for an end to the curious and archaic 1 language, 1 nation obsession of the nationalists. The principal parties in Valencia aren’t going to budge, so the only way of achieving the nominal unity of Catalan and Valencian seems to me to be to rename Catalan “Valencian” (or “Northern Valencian”, or whatever). Unfortunately this won’t resolve the Eastern Aragonese crisis, but hey, would Spain be if its intellectual energies were not 100% invested in infantile squabbles? An economic powerhouse? Damn…

That’s not very nice, Kathy. Why is it? Is it because the writing is so much smaller than it is on other sites? Or is it not nice enough about Catalan?

I didn’t like you Kathy even when I was a strange monster living in a primeval swamp.

I’m pretty sure it wouldn’t make a difference—Norway’s equally infantile and they’ve been doing grand, even ignoring North Sea oil.

(Is it more dangerous to knock small nations than large ones?)

  6. Aidan Kehoe sez:

Perhaps it’s easier to knock a nation one isn’t living in, haha.

The difference between Spain and Norway is that the former has no problem entering into civil war to resolve it. Today, we have idiot moron Blanco saying he would allow Aznar to be tried for Spain’s entry into Iraq. What he doesn’t get is that it was Spain that went to Iraq. That’s how democracies work.

In this vein, I had a great-uncle in northeast Granada that hired a lawyer to sue his next door neighbour. Part of the job was finding something to sue him over.

I’d rather be Catalan than Norwegian.

I’ve always fancied Smurfdom, seriously, and nations don’t come much smaller than that.
