Cycling on Spanish motorways

Des von Bladet links to the story of Anna and Ulf Ström, who have cycled all the way from sunny Sweden to snappy Spain and say that poor Spanish road-planning has sometimes forced them to cycle on motorways. Contractors are actually obliged to build service roads along at least one side of motorways if there are no other alternatives. However, it’s often unclear which side the service road occupies, and parts of it may be lacking, particularly in mountains or where stuff like poor drainage of the main road leads to it being washed away. In open country it’s often more interesting to strike out on promising looking dirt tracks, using the sun or a compass to stay roughly on course.
