Why non-native speakers avoid Basque in informal situations

Trevor @ Saturday August 13th 2005 20:35

There’s an interesting thing here by Estibaliz Amorrortu on bilingualism up in the Basque country. I think the following situation also applies with respect to Catalan:

Full immersion Basque learners easily acquire the written, more formal registers associated with the acquisition of literacy. However, unless they are involved in Basque-speaking networks, they hardly learn any register appropriateness and tend to either overuse the school ‘formal’ register in informal situations, risking being perceived as artificial, or shift to Spanish to avoid register inappropriateness.

Mr Davies has banned Mr cade from his blog! Why? Mr cade wasn’t insulting Mr Davies, just reminding him what he is! Find out this and more at:

You are welcome to give your opinion, but I advise you to read first what Mr cade wrote, just in case you got the wrong impression of him and haplessly let yourself in for a tough ride!
