Vaguely with reference to this, it would seem that Romance pipes are not as sweet as their Indian cousins: “Their ears close as those of the viper at the sound of the enchanter” (“Les orelles clouen com fa l’escursó al so del encantador”). The quote is from Boccaccio’s rather nasty Il Corbaccio (The Old Crow) in the C14th Catalan translation by Narcís Franch.
