    Thanks Trevor. I’ve been fantasising about a Graves-like escape from the big city to somewhere better suited to day-dreaming and child-rearing.

    He declared England to be “grossly overcrowded” — and that was in the 1920s. It seemed to him that eight million — the population in Tudor times — was about right.

    He wrote his Mallorcan memoir in installments and it’s only in the later part of the book that he observes almost with disbelief the beginnings of mass tourism.
