Interactive maps

If you live in Spain and you want data-rich maps that you and others can update easily on your server (eg for generating humming-bird hawk moth distribution maps or locators for a news site), you either spend a lot of time writing an app that will automatically layer your data onto freeware maps out there or you bang together something simple that takes your coordinates and bungs them into an interactive map server and then get the neighbours’ kids to paint the data onto your monitor:

This is from the US Geological Survey, and it’s actually quite difficult to think of any decent public online interactive mapping technology that isn’t funded and produced in the US. The data mapping options provided by the US Census Bureau remain a marvel, but a new favourite of use even to those of us outside the US is Getty’s taxonomy + other junk generator. (GeoURL was trying something along these lines but seems to have died.)
