Earthlings: Ugly Bags of Mostly Water

Apparently I’ve been signed up for the local chess tournament for the next few Saturdays, otherwise this is where I’d really like to be on Saturday 15th:

PHILADELPHIA, May 6 /PRNewswire/ — The Klingon Language Institute (KLI) invites Star Trek fans and anyone curious about Klingon language and culture to a small qep le’ (a fun and educational meeting) during the Cannes Film Festival and Market, Saturday, 15 May from 14:00 – 17:00 at Le Pavillon Croisette, 42 La Croisette, Cannes. The seminar is free of charge. Several members of the KLI will attend the festival to support and promote a new documentary called “Earthlings: Ugly Bags of Mostly Water,” an entertaining
film about Klingon Language speakers that will make its international debut at
the Cannes Film Market.

The qep le’ will provide an extraordinary opportunity for people who are curious about the Klingon language and culture to visit with KLI members who are fluent in Klingon. During the qep le’, guests can expect to learn some Klingon phrases and play interactive games in Klingon. A brief photography session will follow the meeting so that guests can have a picture taken with a Klingon in full regalia.

“These are very entertaining, educational learning sessions,” says Dr. Lawrence Schoen, Director of the Klingon Language. “Frequently we will have many Klingonists show up in Klingon garb — and that makes the gathering even more special.”

Klingonists are flexible, broad-minded people, but I have still never dared ask them whether they feel sympathies for other words similarly prefixed. Clingfilm seems a fair bet, and some might even go so far as to agree with me that velcro, not language, is the most significant invention of humankind. Vodka’s not bad, either. Ooh yes, and I almost forgot to mention the humble bicycle.

I’m one of the subjects of the film and the one who got stuck trying to interpret the English and Klingon content of the qep le’ into French. For the record, no one that the producer hadn’t bribed showed up in Klingon garb.

Clingfilm I call Saran Wrap, and really don’t care for. Velcro is an excellent material but is wholly incompatible with nylon stockings–manufacturers of women’s apparel should take note. Vodka is fine. The bicycle is one of the greatest inventions ever; it’s right up there with language and fire.
