Mrs Rodríguez opens her front door, walks down the street to the large public waste container, jacks open the lid with her foot, and screams in terror as a very dirty man inside reaches to take her bags. Who needs state-run recycling?

It hasn’t gone that far here. If you drive to the dump (now called the Recyclinghof), you are stopped at the gate by organized Eastern Europeans, who say, ‘We are poor Slovakians - have you got any electronic equipment?’

The European recycling industry has been ethnically cleansed. Instead of selling or giving your junk to the gypsies, you’re now expected to pay EUR40 an hour for state-subsidised quasi-charitable businesses run by nice white boys to come and take the stuff away. A foreign friend here died recently and the family - who were already pretty disorientated - had to put up with abuse from the “charity” concerned because a library of English novels didn’t have a sufficiently high resale value.
