The inimitable John Chappell is still warming up for the general elections, but up in Girona Francesc Ferrer is in full flow. Apparently some fatxendes (~rich pillocks) asked him what a republican politician was doing at a reception for the Three Kings. Another man would have said that he was there for the sweets (and, presumably, the beer) but Mr Ferrer is outraged. Now that the king no longer governs but merely reigns, he froths, the monarchy-republic dialectic (his phrase) has become less grave, and “the only rational reason to demand a republic is in order to deepen democracy and activate participative democracy,” in which he is surely right.
