call that music?!

MIT’s Eigenradio (eigen means “own” in Dutch and several other languages) “makes its optimal music by analyzing in real time dozens of radio stations at once. When our bank of computers has heard enough music, it will go to work on making more just like it.” Here’s a picture for people who like pictures:

Someone who knows more about these things tells me that eigen almost certainly refers to the eigenvectors used in the analysis process. Eigen in this context also, of course, means “own”.

   Here I am, thinking that eigenvectors (-values) were invented by this guy named Eigen. Better start researching. As soon as I figure out how this blogging works, I’ll let you know.

   I’m trying to expunge him from history. The story I’ve heard is that, aged six, he was in the maths class and the teacher said: OK children, now I want to see what you’ve done this week. Dear little Lucy put up her hand and stammered: Miss, look, I’ve done a complex reformulation of Euler. But Jan Eigen pushed her aside and shouted: Eigen vector eerst! I believe he’s still there, all on his own.
