The story I've heard is that, aged six, he was in the maths class and the teacher said: OK children, now I want to see what you've done this week. Dear little Lucy put up her hand and stammered: Miss, look, I've done a complex reformulation of Euler. But Jan Eigen pushed her aside and shouted: Eigen vector eerst! I believe he's still there, all on his own.
