The route takes us out of the ancient town of Vic, out of the silty plain and into the siblingettes of the Dolomitian mille feuilles. (Marl? Grey sedimentary, with clay and calcium carbonate, local name marga.) They’re eroding fast and theatrically, so book in the next couple of hundred thousand years. Assortment of Pinus sylvestris and Quercus humilis slip-sliding down the slopes. Garrigue dominated by Quercus coccifera. C12th (heavily modified C18th) parish church (ridiculous end of priest and his speed-obsessed revolutionary murderer), chapel commemorating the 1885 cholera epidemic (visit the monument to local boy and vaccine-discoverer, Jaume Ferran, in Barcelona), very steep climb to summit and ex-castle with excellent views of the Pyrenees, Montseny, Vic, Tavertet. Classic smelly old Catalan farmhouse with affectionate doggie. Explanation of the Catalan genesis of the tennis phrase "The bull is out." Optional extension to gang-plagued (Moors vs Christians) town centre for reconstructed C2nd Roman temple, C11th+ cathedral, market square, 1892-3 sugar factory, the region’s famous pork products etc. Lots for Romanesque and other architectural freaks, so tell me if you’re interested in anything in particular. |
