Garraf

Josep Pla:

Geologically speaking, the Garraf massif is very curious because it contains in it a change of colour which for the traveller is equivalent to an historical frontier. Its eastern range forms a group of earthy- and sienna-coloured slates which endow it with a more pronouncedly dark tone. The high part of the massif, in contrast, is calcareous and based on marls, and this makes it appear white. This makes a very vivid contrast of the two colours, a contrast which constitutes in reality the frontier between Old Catalunya and New Catalunya.
